I would like to use a Federated login (Google) or OpenID authentication procedure so that user does not need to register email + password for my app, but rather can use Google (or other account) that is saved in AccountManager. Up until early this year, the solution was using GAE, as per Nick Johnson's famous recipe.

Federated single sign-on (or SSO) is a modern way to solve the problem of having multiple logins between different services and applications. Let's take a look at three of today's common federated identity protocols: SAML, OAuth 2.0, and OpenID Connect. SAML The first of the authentication methods that I'd like to talk about today is

Federated Identity - Authentication | Okta Developer

    https://developer.okta.com/books/api-security/authn/federated/
There are two main players in a federated identity system: an Identity Provider (IdP) and a Service Provider (SP). Often, the service provider is the application that you need to log in to, and the IdP is the provider of the users that can log in. OAuth 2.0 OAuth 2.0 is a delegated authorization framework which is ideal for APIs.

What Does Federated Login Mean? A Simple, Detailed Answer ...

    https://carvesystems.com/news/what-does-federated-login-mean-a-simple-detailed-answer/
Federated login enables users to use a single authentication ticket/token to obtain access across all the networks of the different IT systems. As a result, once the identity provider's authentication is complete, they now also have access to the other federated domains. The users don't have to perform any other separate login processes.

Can OpenID Connect be used to implement social login?

    https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/231435/can-openid-connect-be-used-to-implement-social-login
Yeah, this is ok and a widely used pattern. I don't quite understand the link, I think it's talking about a potential threat, not an inherent flaw. Lots of apps use OAuth 2 for federated authentication, and while it's somewhat prone to implementation flaws, it can be done securely. OpenID Connect is based on OAuth 2 and designed for authentication.
