So when the system is locked, your extensions are disabled and due to errors in the extension or since it is disabled, some how the functionality of gnome-shell is disturbed, thus causing the issue. If you have multiple extensions.. you should disable all the extensions and enable one by one to check which extension is causing the problem..

A few things that might indicate whether this is the cause of the problem for you: 1) Gnome 3 on Wayland and Xorg both kick you back to the login screen 2) Logging in with the Cinnamon or another desktop works fine. I was never able to find a log that clearly indicated the problem, so if someone knows, that would be a nice addition to this thread.

To stop the Gnome login screen from running, you'll need to make use of the Systemd stop command. So, in the TTY virtual terminal, try systemctl stop gdm.service with sudo privileges. sudo systemctl stop gdm.service Running the "systemctl stop" command above should instantly kill the Gnome display manager.

Sounds like a display driver issue. Check /var/log/messages from a console session, see what was updated in /var/log/yum.log, and try and isolate updates to X, gdm, videodrivers, etc, and do a downgrade of those.
