- Basically came to the conclusion that Toyota axle housings are not strong enough to handle the extra torque load a portal axle would place on it. Everything else about the toy axle is great for a portal. In fact when I get the time I plan on making a Volvo Toy highbred portal axle, Toy third and axles with Volvo housing and portals. Save Reply

Land Rovers working on a prototype portal axle rig and Mercedes uses them in Unimogs. As far as them being stronger I would bet a lot of money that they are. Think there's a reason the military uses them?
