Ctrl+alt+end gets me the task manager though. What got me back up was while in task manager i clicked File > Run new task then executed explorer.exe and things came back to life.

After installing all of the updates on the fresh and clean instance of WS2012R2, I did get login and password prompt while trying to RDP, but it immediately disappeared after hitting Enter.     Did you check the logs to see if xrdp is unhappy about something. I normally ssh into a box, then run my rdp server from that terminal, then rdp in and watch the terminal output, to see if rdp complained about anything. If at first you don't see anything helpful, try running xrdp in a more verbose mode, and check the syslog (/var/log/syslog).
