Connecting to the login screen with VNC while using GDM3 is currently not possible. The easiest way to get this VNC functionality back is to simply switch back from GDM3 to LightDM. LightDM is still being actively developed and used by many Linux distributions including some other flavors of Ubuntu. So no worries there. Install LightDM

Logged in to the server through PuTTY using root (because that's the acount I need to use for logging in through VNC). Ran vncpasswd and set the VNC login password. Saved the script as /etc/init.d/vncserver after changing the following parameters: USER="root" DISPLAY="1" Did chmod +x /etc/init.d/vncserver. Did chkconfig --level 2345 vncserver on.

When I power this machine on I would like to be able to access it with a VNC client to enter the password and then use the desktop remotely. Is there an arcane chant that will enable me to move the VNC server forward in the boot order to make it load with, or prior to, the login screen so that I can accomplish this?

A display driver shim that sits between Windows and your graphics card and replaces the video data with something else, like a blank screen. This is the method that LogMeIn uses if you enable Display Blanking - while a LogMeIn session is active, it uses a display driver it installs to effectively disconnect the monitor.

1 I set up VNC server with xinetd. Also configured GDM so that XDMCP is enabled. VNC connection seems okay, but GDM login screen is not shown. Instead I can only see old bare X screen (gray meshed background and X-shaped mouse pointer), which I can't do any interaction with it. What can I do to fix the problem? No log is written below /var/log/.

Setting up VNC was easy enough, I just edited /etc/sysconfig/vncservers, added a password with vncpasswd and was off and running. The only problem is that I must first login to the machine the old fashioned keyboard and mouse way in order to sudo service vncserver start whenever I reboot the machine.
