This maybe a stupid question but what is the default login for CentOS 6.3? I am getting a terminal screen with "localhost Login:". Fresh install from DVD on a used celeron computer with 512 Ram. I remember being asked for a root password but not a user account??? I am able to login as root with the supplied password though.

Localhost Login and Password - University of Cambridge

    https://www-uxsup.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/doc/redhat/ES2.1/rhl-gsg-en-7.2/s1-q-and-a-bootlogin.html
Unless you specified a host name for your computer, or get that information from a network, your Linux install will call your machine localhost.localdomain by default. When you get to that initial prompt, it is asking you to log in to your system. If you created a user account during install, you can log in using that name and password.

1 I guess you forgot to set password while installation, now you can workaround by resetting root password. Follow the below procedure: 1 - In the boot grub menu select option to edit. 2 - Select Option 1 to edit (e). 3 - Go to the line of Linux 16 and change ro with rw init=/sysroot/bin/sh. 4 - Now press Control+x to start on single user mode.

How to configure localhost on Linux? - Stack Overflow

vi /etc/hosts Note that you will need root access to do this. In that file you can just extend the localhost mapping to also include your custom hostname SERVER01 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost SERVER01 Once you do this, from the same CentOS terminal you can type ping SERVER01 and it should give you a proper ping results.
