- Portal axles would be just fine in a DD if you convert to disc brakes. The gearing would be nicely offset with some 40" tires, most particularly if you have an OD transmission. I do not think that it is all that prudent to be running around at 70 mph on 40+" tires anyway so the revs would be tolerable in actual use.
