It is stubbornly a green background with a ugly "circle" icon in the middle. It works ... but, damn, it's ugly. I've checked a few things and I am definitely running lightdm.

Therefore to the best of my knowledge, which ends with Linux Mint 18.1 at the time being, there is no xfce login screen and no Cinnamon login screen. There is just a Linux Mint login screen.
