Given the error message in ~/.xorgxrdp.11.log ( failed to take device: Operation not permitted) and this solved similar problem (although not with xrdp), I tried enabling KMS (I learned radeon is the driver) with $ sudo nano /etc/initram-tools/modules (adding radeon at the end) $ sudo update-initramfs -u $ sudo shutdown -r

3 Answers3. Show activity on this post. It is likely that you did not set the username/password correctly. The session manager tries to use your username/password to unlock the screen. When the username/password are incorrect you get the login failed for display 0 message.

just a hint : i had the same issue. the message (yes not so clear at first sight) indicates that you have to disconnect the user you use in xrdp from the linux server (closing session without stopping the computer) .. the error indicates that screen #0 is in use by the already connected user. it works fine afterwards..
